Dr. Watson wins Journal Award from Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers

Dr. Andrew B. Watson has been selected by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) as the recipient of the 2014 Journal Award for his article, “High Frame Rates and Human Vision: A View Through the Window of Visibility,” published in the March 2013 issue of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. Dr. Watson will receive the award from President Wendy Aylsworth at the Society’s Honors and Awards Ceremony during the SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition, October 21-23, 2014 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, CA. The article describes the application of basic principles of human vision to the question of “how many frames per second are required to make video and movies appear smooth and natural?”. Using the theoretical idea of the “window of visibility,” all aspects of recording and display can be analyzed.

Dr. Watson Receives Fellow Award from Society for Information Display

At their annual meeting, Dr. Watson received the Fellow Award from the Society for Information Display (SID). The citation for the award reads: "For his outstanding contributions to both basic and applied vision science, including applications to image quality metrics, image compression and psychophysically-based display measurements." The membership grade of Fellow is one of unusual professional distinction conferred by the Board of Directors, acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee, upon a SID member of outstanding qualifications and experience as a scientist or engineer in the field of information display who has made widely recognized and significant contributions to the advancement of the display field. The SID ( is a 6000 member organization of professionals in the technical and business disciplines that relate to display research, design, manufacturing, applications, marketing, and sales.

Dr. Andrew Watson awarded the 2008 ARVO Special Recognition Award

At the Annual Meeting of the 13,000-member Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Dr. Andrew B. Watson received the 2008 ARVO Special Recognition Award. One of ARVO’s most prestigious prizes, the Special Recognition Award is presented periodically to honor outstanding service to ARVO or the vision research community. The citation for Dr. Watson’s award reads: “For his foresight, energy, and dedication in launching and editing ARVO’s first electronic scientific journal, Journal of Vision.” More...

Dr. Andrew Watson awarded the 2007 Otto Shade Award

Dr. Andrew B. Watson has been the 3000 Otto Shade Prize. The Otto Schade Prize in “Display Performance and Image Quality” is awarded for an outstanding scientific or technical achievement in, or contribution to, the advancement of functional performance and/or image quality of information displays. The award was presented on May 21, 2007 at the Annual Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition of the Society for Information Display, held in Long Beach, CA.

Standard Spatial Observer Featured on Cover of Information Display Magazine

An article by Dr. Andrew B. Watson entitled The Spatial Standard Observer: A new tool for display metrology was featured on the cover of the January 2007 issue of Information Display magazine, Vol. 23, No. 1. The Spatial Standard Observer is a tool developed at ARC for design, specification, and inspection of visual displays. It includes a software algorithm that incorporates a simple model of human-visual sensitivity to spatial contrast for use in a wide variety of display inspection and measurement applications. Spatial Standard Observer provides the ability to automatically measure mura (blemishes) in flat panel displays and will improve the efficiency and thus lower the cost of automated manufacture of large flat-panel displays. Spatial Standard Observer also being applied to a wide range of aerospace problems, including visibility of UAVs, legibility of fonts, and discriminability of cockpit symbols. NASA U.S. and foreign patents have been filed.
