- Hazardous States of Awareness - Progress (01-03/00)
January - March 2000
Monthly Report
Lance Prinzel, Ph.D.
NASA Langley Research Center
1. Provided funding support for 4th Automation
/ Situation Awareness conference to be held in Savannah, GA in
August, 2000. The conference will contain papers and talks on
human-automation interaction and situation awareness issues involved
with advanced automation.
2. Dr. Prinzel has been invited as keynote speaker, 4th Automation
/ Situation Awareness conference. He will present work on self-regulation,
psychophysiology, adaptive automation, and other research efforts
in the PPSF program.
3. Dr. Mica Endsley, of SA Technologies, was invited to present
her research on shared situation awareness in aviation. Dr. Endsley
is being supported partly by funds from Level III sublement of
PPSF.
4. Dr. Mica Endsley will be on contract to examine situation
awareness of advanced automation and visual displays. Contract
has been awarded as a JOFOC in March, 2000.
5. Old Dominion University contract awarded to Dr. Mark Scerbo
and his colleagues. He will be examining adaptive automation
and the efficacy of using psychophysiological measures for use
in these systems.
6. Publication: Freeman, F.G., Mikulka, P.J., Scerbo, M.W., Prinzel,
L.J., & Clouatre, K. (in press). Evaluation of a psychophysiologically
controlled adaptive automation system using performance on a
tracking task. Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback.
7. Publication: Scerbo, M.W., Freeman, F.G., Mikulka, P.J., &
Prinzel, L.J. (in press). A biocybernetic system for adaptive
automation. In R. Backs new book (title?). Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence
Erlbaum Associates.
8. Contract negotiations are ongoing with Microsoft to modify
MS Flight Simulator 2000 to allow adaptive control based on physiological
signals.
9. Bradley University grant awarded for ~30K to examine primary
and secondary task measures as triggers for adaptive automation
and how these measures may be used in conjunction with physiological
assessments of hazardous states of awareness.
10. 30K sent from LaRC to Ames to support work on EEG energy
density measures research being conducted by Les Montogomery
of Lockheed Martin and Dr. Luna of NASA.
11. Dr. Alan Pope will present work on our work here at LaRC
(my PPSF work and Alan's TAG work) on biofeedback and self-regulation
and Human/computer interfaces to STRICOM and NAWC TSD in Orlando,
FL. The meeting will include Tom Mastaglio and Mike Macedonia
(Chief Scientist of U.S. Army STRICOM). The meeting is intended
to see if any spin-off potential exists for military training
purposes.
11. CDR completed, cognitive awareness training study (CATS)
12. PDR completed, stress-counter response training
13. Self-efficacy studies completed (sent charts to Len in Feb.)
14. Variable priority study completed (sent charts to Len in
Feb.) |
