A large number of computational methods for assessing the quality of static images have been proposed. They differ along many dimensions, especially their range of application areas and complexity. This review is intended to help the researcher in search of a suitable metric. The paper develops a framework for describing image quality metrics, summarizes the methods that we have researched, describes some of the relationships between the methods, and provides entry references to the literature.
